Dwight David Eisenhower, 1955:

Without God there could be no American form of government nor an American way of life. Recognition of the Supreme Being is the first - the most basic - expression of Americanism.

The quote was passed on to me, happily, as it rings true. The best disbelieving intellectual can never successfully rationalize a way to separate the origins of law from the divine, as if the wings of an airplane could be removed once the craft attains lift. Laws can only be upheld if absolute principles, greater than men, exist; and man - finite, mortal and ever in vain pursuit of complete knowledge and perception - cannot be credited with conceiving of these principles.
