A story about American soldiers imparting hope to children by importing the game of baseball in a remote Afghan village is credited as the inspiration for Spirit of America, a nonprofit group dedicated to arming our military with the most powerful weapons against tyranny the free world can offer: goods, services and creature comforts for newly liberated peoples in their first months and years of freedom. (Complete with weblog.) Just a few days ago, the Wall Street Journal challenged its readers to give towards a goal of $100,000 to Jim Hake's capitalist, philanthropist dreamchild. The Journal's editorial page thanked them yesterday for donating over $700,000 — a number that continues to grow. I gave $25 this morning. As the fine example of Paul "Chief Wiggles" Holton demonstrated in Iraq with Operation Give, the only match for American military power is American generosity.
